Three-spoke front wheels are loved because they’re fast in most wind conditions and laterally stiff. They work in no wind, block headwinds, and strong crosswinds, and everything in between. The PRO Textreme Carbon 3-Spoke wheel takes the wheel that much further. This wheel might seem new, but it is the choice of Shimano-sponsored pro teams, like Team Sky, as PRO is an arm of Shimano, making wheels, bars, posts, and saddles for the component giant.

This is a wheel fabricated primarily out of Textreme carbon-fiber cloth. PRO chose this because the material yields a stiff and light wheel. It also has a striking checkerboard pattern that looks good standing still or moving. At the center are the guts of a Dura-Ace 9000 front hub, which is known for both its smoothness and durability.

The three spokes are directional in design, and so marked on the wheel, to maximize aerodynamics. The rim is 65mm deep, a mid-depth, and 24mm wide, moderately wide. The wheel weighs 765g. The shape sits in a sweet spot between aerodynamics and weight. It’s fast on flat roads, and the weight won’t slow you down on hills. The width also better supports tires, making it easier to drop tire pressure a teeny bit to reduce rolling resistance, and add comfort.

The rim features a carbon braking surface that is best stopped with carbon-fiber-specific pads. You’ll need a valve extender. They recommend a minimum length of 65mm. They recommend tires no narrower than 24mm, as it creates an ideal transition between the tire to the rim and vice versa. The wheel comes with a quick release skewer and wheel bag. If you want to add a magnet for a speedometer, the best bet is a sticker magnet.
